Definition of Architecture

Camera clubs have various definitions for the set subject of Architecture. To confuse things, here is another definition! This one comes from the US government (under 17 U.S. Code, Sec. 101).

“Humanly habitable structures that are intended to be both permanent and stationary, such as houses and office buildings, and other permanent and stationary structures designed for human occupancy, including but not limited to churches, museums, gazebos, and garden pavilions”.

My rather loose personal definition of Architecture is “any built form”. This would include industrial buildings, which might be a borderline case for human occupancy. Also, engineering structures like bridges and dams. These aren’t intended for human occupancy, but make great subjects. Then there are borderline cases, such as these grain silos (engineering structures not designed for human occupancy), that have been repurposed as an apartment building.
